SPORT & COMBAT SPORTS

Reporting and documentary photography from inside sport.

Competition is only part of the story.

Katherine Butler reports on and photographs athletes, fights, training environments, and sporting communities, focusing on the preparation before competition, the relationships around it, and what remains after the crowd leaves.

Journalism from inside the environment

Katherine’s background in combat-sports photography informs a broader journalism practice built around observation, access and reporting.

Her work spans MMA, boxing, and football, with particular interest in athlete pathways, sporting culture, identity, supporter communities, and the human stories behind competition.

In September 2026, she reported and photographed Brazil v Australia in Townsville on assignment for The Brazilian Report, covering both the international fixture and the Brazilian community surrounding the event.

Combat Sports

Fight night is loud. The work is quieter.

Katherine’s documentary work follows the preparation, repetition, corners, relationships, pressure and aftermath surrounding competition.

Her coverage spans boxing, MMA and training environments, with an emphasis on access and moments that reveal the person behind the performance.

Football & Sporting Culture

Football extends beyond the pitch.

Katherine reports on and photographs players, supporters and sporting communities, with particular interest in international competition, identity, place and the cultures that form around the game.
